Paul Thomas Anderson`s new movie The Master is set in 1950 America. The film centers on the relationship between the charismatic leader Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), who aims to spread the new religion ‘The Cause’, and his new disciple. Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line) plays the young drifter Freddie Sutton who becomes the Master`s right-hand man. Freddie begins to question the group`s ideals and gets into trouble. Amy Adams stars as the religious leader’s wife, Mary Sue.
’The Cause’ has been widely compared to Scientology, with Hoffman’s character believed to be based on Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. Hoffman bears an uncanny resemblance to Hubbard. Paul Thomas Anderson denied that his film was based on Scientology.
Cinematographer Mihai Malaimare Jr. has shot more than half the movie on 65mm film.
The Master reunites Paul Thomas Anderson and Philip Seymour Hoffman for the fifth time, following successful collaborations on movies like Boogie Nights, Magnolia and Punch-Drunk Love.

The Master movie is going to celebrate its world premier at the Venice Film Festival. The movie is going to be screened on 1st September 19:00 – Sala Grande and 20:00 – PalaBiennale.
